Frequently Asked Questions about our Edinburgh Self-Care Studio, Infrared Sauna, and BEMER PEMF mat.

What is the Self Care Studio?

The Self Care Studio is a private space within our Edinburgh-based wellness clinic dedicated to promoting relaxation, wellness, and healing. It features an infrared sauna and a BEMER PEMF mat, both designed to enhance your well-being.  Pre-booking the Sauna at our Edinburgh clinic is required. To find out more about the sauna and mat, please read below.

How does the infrared sauna work?

Our Sunlighten Series II infrared sauna uses infrared to generate heat that directly warms your body without heating the surrounding air. This penetrating heat provides a deeper level of relaxation, helps with detoxification, boosts circulation, and provides relief for muscle aches and joint pain.

Does Infrared give people tans, or sunburns?

No, this should be considered more as infrared "heat" as opposed to "light." There is zero chance you'll get a tan or sunburn, and it is safe for people with sensitive skin.

What are the benefits of using the infrared sauna?

Using the infrared sauna in our Edinburgh clinic can offer a range of benefits, including improved skin health, stress reduction, enhanced immune function, increased metabolism, and detoxification. It can also support pain relief, relaxation, and overall well-being.

What is the PEMF mat and how does it work?

BEMER devices use a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) to deliver a patented bio-rhythmically defined therapeutic signal via a mat which you lay upon. It is important to note that you don't "feel" anything while laying on the mat; it is not a massage mat or anything of the sort. Gentle electromagnetic pulses stimulate the body's natural healing and regeneration processes, promoting improved blood flow, enhanced oxygen supply, fast healing, and overall cellular health. BEMER is a brand of Pulsing Electromagnetic Field mat, and stands for Bio-Electro-Magnetic-Energy-Regulation.

BEMER is an FDA Class II cleared consumer medical device that’s easy-to-use, non-invasive and is intended to stimulate and increase local blood flow in healthy muscles. BEMER is designed specifically to target the circulation within the musculature — the core system necessary for optimal health.

What are the benefits of using the PEMF mat?

The PEMF mat offers a range of benefits that enhance the body's natural recovery process. By correcting cellular dysfunction throughout the body, it stimulates and exercises cells, effectively recharging them and promoting improved overall cellular health. This natural rejuvenation process can provide patients with increased energy levels and vitality. Additionally, the PEMF mat has been shown to improve athletic performance, reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and accelerate recovery from injuries. Its therapeutic effects can help you recover faster and support your overall well-being.

How long is a Sauna and PEMF mat session?

A session in the private Self Care Studio typically lasts for 45 minutes, allowing ample time for relaxation. Only 25 minutes in the Infrared Sauna is recommended, and no more than 30 minutes unless you are experienced with the effects of infrared treatments specifically; this is due to the Infrared Sauna inducing your body to sweat, leading to dehydration, which can make you feel lightheaded if you stay in for too long. The PEMF mat therapy session duration begins at 8 minutes for the first three visits, and increases to 16 minutes for Program 2, and again to 22 minutes for Program 3.

What should I bring, or what do you provide, for a Self Care Session in Edinburgh?

When available, we provide a glass of Electrolyte Synergy before the treatment, since hydration is very important for the therapy's efficacy, as well as a towel. If you feel like you may need a second towel, please feel free to request one before the start of the treatment.

You will first use the PEMF mat, and for this you can be fully clothed, but no shoes are allowed on the table and you should wear nothing constricting. After the PEMF treatment, you will transition into the Infrared Sauna. The sauna is about 54 C (130 F) and you should wear whatever will make you comfortable in that environment; some people wear a swimming costume, others prefer to be nude.

There is no shower here at the Edinburgh infrared sauna and self-care studio: the healing qualities of the infrared sauna linger as your core temperature is raised, and a cold shower counter-acts the desired effects. After you are done with your infrared sauna, just towel off and go about your day.

What is the price for a session in the Self Care Studio?

Combined Sauna & PEMF: £50

Only Sauna: £40

Only PEMF: £20

Buy a 6-Session Package for the price of 5!

How often should I use the infrared sauna and PEMF mat?

While the frequency of sauna and PEMF mat sessions can vary based on individual needs and goals, we recommend once a week. You can see a relief of muscle soreness after one visit, but the effects of the PEMF mat can take multiple sessions before becoming apparent. We recommend consulting with Dr. April Blake or our affiliated providers to determine the optimal frequency and duration of sessions for your specific situation.
